In New York City, the speeding taxis, singing sirens, honking horns, thundering subways and infinite pedestrians can sometimes make you feel as though you´ll never find peace again. And in that moment, that´s when you need to head to the spa.
The pristine sleek white interior of Nuvison MedSpa is a calm oasis amongst the hustle and bustle of midtown Manhattan. Curved walls and accents of midnight blue throughout the space lend a modern contemporary feel to this medical practice, where a variety of laser-based procedures (vision correction, skin repair, hair removal) and Botox treatments are performed.
After being welcomed by the spa´s executive director, Matthew Pruitt, I filled out the requisite paperwork in the comfort of one of the consultation rooms while we discussed what was in store for my visit.
Noticing I wear glasses, Pruitt asked if I would first like to have a Lasik (laser eye surgery) consultation to determine whether or not I would be a candidate for laser vision correction. Laser eye surgery is performed on people that have nearsightedness, farsightedness and Astigmatism, and involves reshaping the cornea with a laser. It has a very brief recovery period, with patients being able to see the next day with out the aid of glasses or contact lenses. Lasik is something I had heard of but never really investigated, so I was excited when Pruitt determined I am a candidate for the surgery. As Pruitt talked to me about the procedure restores vision, I realized that while it would be a financial investment initially, when compared with the cost of replacing glasses over a lifetime, it made sense. And then there´s the convenience factor (no glasses to drag around town with me) and the vanity factor.
When we were finished discussing Lasik eye surgery, I moved on to my consultation with laser skin specialist and aesthetician, who explained the various treatments and the latest technologies that Nuvision offers, such as Vi Peels and Isolaz. We decided to go with an Isolaz treatment to clean out my clogged pores, while improving the tone and texture of my skin.
Isolaz uses a breakthrough technology called Photopneumatics", a unique therapy that combines a vacuum and painless broadband light to extract dirt and blackheads from pores, and purify from the inside. It´s exceptionally good for clearing up acne prone skin and can also be used to minimize skin discoloration and for hair removal.
Marisa first cleansed my face with a Skinceuticals cleanser and then performed an all over Isolaz vacuum on my face, without using the laser, which removed dirt and oil and unclogged my pores. She systematically went over my face in sections (similar in process to microdermabrasion) and it felt like a small vacuum sucking on my skin. It was not at all uncomfortable; it just felt a little unusual.
Marisa then sprayed my face with water so the laser would not feel hot on my skin and then did a combination of the vacuum and laser. The whole treatment took less than 10 minutes and was totally painless. I had no redness or irritation afterwards, though I was told a small amount of patients may experience sensitivity and all patients are told to avoid exposure to the sun for two days.
For acne treatments or skin rejuvenation, patients are usually advised to book a series of five Isolaz treatments in order to see an improvement in their complexion; a small investment to make in the name of perfect skin. After the treatment, my pores were noticeably less clogged and the pimples I did have cleared up overnight. My skin looked fresh and clean, like I had just had a conventional facial but with the huge added bonus of a blemish-free complexion.
